Cinemalaya's 'Lost Sabungeros' screenings were canceled due to complaints by the directors' guild.

Claiming that the cancellation of their film's premiere at the 20th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is an "intimidation tactic" meant to silence the filmmakers, the directors of the investigative documentary "Lost Sabungeros" have objected.

“In the wake of security concerns for public safety surrounding the screening venue of ‘Lost Sabungeros’ at the 20th Cinemalaya Film Festival, we stand resolute in our commitment to creative freedom and the pursuit of truth,” it said. “We are deeply concerned by the intimidation tactics employed by parties that seek to stifle the voice of filmmakers.”

The group brings attention to the difficulties faced by filmmakers who use their work to question ingrained conventions, highlighting the recent cancelation of the "Lost Sabungeros" screening due to concerns for public safety.

“Our thoughts and empathy are with the filmmaker, the producers, the festival, and the audience affected by the distressing situation. The safety of our creative community is paramount, and it is through collective vigilance and solidarity that we will overcome these challenges,” DGPI added.

The documentary "Lost Sabungeros," produced by GMA Public Affairs, centers on the disappearance of 34 cockfighters in 2021. The movie was scheduled to open at Ayala Malls Manila Bay, but security concerns forced the cancellation. Bryan Brazil, the director, conveyed his dissatisfaction and advised other filmmakers to safeguard their artistic environments. The DGPI stressed how critical it is to confront societal challenges and create an atmosphere that supports artistic expression in the face of hardship.
