BTS' Suga Fined 15 Million Won for Drunk Driving Incident on Electric Scooter

A fine of 15 million won, or $11,468 was imposed on Suga of the K-pop boy band BTS for operating an electric scooter while intoxicated.

In a summary ruling rendered on Friday, Seoul Western District Court Judge Lee Yoo-seop—a judge who typically grants a speedier settlement in cases regarded relatively minor—imposed the fine. That is the same amount as the previous sentence that the prosecutors had asked for.

Police apprehended Suga, whose true name is Min Yoon-gi, on August 6 at approximately 11:15 p.m. while intoxicated while operating an e-scooter close to his Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, residence. His blood alcohol concentration was at 0.227 percent, well beyond the 0.08 standard for license revocation.

At the Yongsan Police Station in Korea, a singer admitted to being involved in an incident involving drunk driving. As an alternative to the necessary military service, he is currently serving as a social service agent.

Suga apologized in Korean by handwritten letter to BTS members and supporters on August 25 via the Weverse website regarding the incident. He wrote, "I feel terrible and incredibly sorry for hurting my team and my members." Suga said, "I apologize to our fans who have always shown me more love than I deserve," and he added that he had been grieving over his actions.
