Spiral Closes, Okada Manila's Medley Buffet Steps Up with New Cheese Room
On July 1, Spiral, a well-known hotel buffet in Metro Manila, closed its doors, leaving many buffet enthusiasts with a hole in their tummies the size of a cheese room. Concurrently, Okada Manila's famed Medley Buffet has undergone renovations in its original location to add more space for dining and private dining areas, such as The Cheese Room.
This is what The Cheese Room at Medley Buffet has to offer.
There is an excellent assortment of both local and foreign cheeses when you enter the temperature-controlled chamber. Raymond Muñoz, the Cheesemonger who works at The Cheese space, claims that the space is maintained at a constant temperature of 15° to 18° Celsius and has roughly 30 types of cheese on display. Crafted cheeses from France, Italy, and our own Davao-based Malagos brand are available at Medley's The Cheese Rooms. On weekends, they bring out more specialty cheeses and serve melted Raclette if you truly want the whole experience. They provide cold cuts, jam, honey, and a fascinating assortment of flavored olives in addition to cheese.
At first sight, the table laden with cheeses of every conceivable form, size, and flavor may overwhelm you—in the greatest way possible. Start with the must-trys: Brie de Meaux, a rich and creamy brie with a hint of funk (yes, you can eat the rind); Tomme brûlée, a creamy, nutty cheese served with a cheese curler; and Bastardo del Grappa, a crumbly cheese that is quite neutral and suitable for beginners, despite its assertive name.
Cheeses such as Tomme brûlée, Brie de Meaux, Bastardo del Grappa, Brin d'Amour, Pecorino Tartufo, and Shropshire Blue are available at the Medley Buffet. The Cheese Room has Queso de Cabra Al Vino, Mango and Ginger, and Malagos Mango Sublime for those who like their cheeses sweeter. Cold cuts go well with these cheeses, however honey is advised to counteract the sweetness. Seafood selections at the buffet include grilled tuna Panga and Kilawin, as well as a Sutukil station for preparing fresh fish. Along with a variety of international and local dishes, the buffet offers roasted meats, dim sum, pho or laksa, and grilled pig prepared in the samgyup style. Desserts include cakes, kakanin, halo-halo or crepes, and a chocolate fountain. There is only space for four individuals in the room at once, but a Cheese Ambassador can assist guests in making their way through the options.
