Philippine Lambanog Secures Second Place as World's Best Spirit in TasteAtlas Ranking

The native alcoholic beverage lambanog, which is made from coconuts, has unintentionally become well-known worldwide.

As per the online food authority TasteAtlas, Lambanog achieved the highly sought-after ranking of second on their esteemed “Top 79 Spirits in the World” list, which was published on March 15.

This remarkable rating of 4.4 stars out of 5 puts Scottish Speyside Scotch, the number one ranked whisky, right up against lambanog.

Interestingly, the only other Filipino on the list is Lambanog.

The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) states that lambanog is created from naturally fermented coconut sap and has a minimum of 30% alcohol content. It was formerly referred to as the “poor man’s drink” because of how reasonably priced it was, costing between P37 and P120 a liter, according to the PCA.

“Lambanog is traditionally enjoyed neat, usually as a shot, but it also blends well in cocktails and mixed drinks. In the past, it was frequently produced by farmers, similar to a local version of moonshine, but recently it has mostly shifted to factory production, and its quality has significantly improved,” TasteAtlas said.

Although there are several tastes and sweetness levels available in contemporary versions, the classic version is consumed either unadulterated or as a mixer for mixed drinks. The distinct flavor of Lambanog is highlighted in this esteemed ranking with other world-famous brands such as Scottish Islay Scotch, Serbian Viljamovka, and French Armagnac.
