The Great British Bake Off's newest co-host is Alison Hammond.
The Great British Bake Off has announced that controversial comedian Matt Lucas will be replaced by British actress and television personality Alison Hammond in the upcoming fall season.
This news comes just a few months after Matt Lucas's departure from the program. The actress announced her new role by interviewing the edible figurines about how excited they are in an Instagram post that featured a cake with figurines of herself, judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith, and longtime cohost Noel Fielding at a press conference.
Following a stint on Big Brother in 2002, Hammond's career in reality television began. Since then, she has made appearances on British programs like Strictly Come Dancing, Loose Women, the Hotel Transylvania movie series, and, as a cohost, the 2022 BAFTA award show. Additionally, she made appearances on a number of cooking programs in the early 2000s and on Celebrity MasterChef UK in 2014.
Her comedic persona exudes joy and adds some much-needed wholesomeness to TV's best comfort watch, especially in light of the GBBO's recent trend toward demanding, challenging, and hurried technical challenges.
Hammond is a promising match for the Platonic ideal of the show, which is encouraging, straightforward, and focused on the food and contestants. She is the first person of color to host GBBO in the show's 13-year history.
Along with experience and passion for baking, she will bring assurance to her role as host. It's crucial to understand that a single hire won't drastically alter the show's personality.
