Drinkable Mayonnaise? Lawson’s Latest Creation Delights Fans in Japan

Who would have thought? A condiment that's typically spread, is now ready to be sipped. Lawson, a Japanese convenience store chain, has launched "Nomu mayo," a drinkable mayonnaise that's turning heads and taste buds.

Nomu mayo, a drinkable mayonnaise that you can get in a cup and begin consuming before you even leave the store, was introduced in November by Lawson, a chain of convenience stores in Japan. According to Lawson, the drink is a chilled beverage that mayo lovers have been longing for, as Sora News24 stated. It costs ¥198 ($1.30) for 200ml.

One X user who tried Nomu mayo stated that it is made with "milk, dairy-type product, and mayonnaise seasoning." However, as NDTV pointed out, the company makes it clear that Nomu mayo is a "mayonnaise-style drink" and "not mayonnaise," so no, you can't just shove a bottle of Hellman's into your pantry and call it the same thing.

The convenience shop is launching the product for a "test sale period" to gauge consumer reaction, according to The Independent. And although there has been a lot of misinformation on the internet, many people have been at least intrigued enough to give it a try for scientific reasons.

One Twitter commenter said, "I literally said 'Don't Do That' out loud," in response to Unseen Japan's tweet. Another said, "I love mayonnaise, but I draw the line at drinking it," while another said, "would.

Those who have actually used it for themselves aren't giving it particularly positive reviews, either. Another local X user commented, "I tried it, so you don't have to." One Reddit member who tried the drink said, "I just tried it, and it’s awful, just as you’d expect. Liquid mayo, salty, mayo-y, maybe a bit dilly? I'm not sure about the last one, but I couldn't handle more than one sip." It was thrown away. However, despite all of these cautions, we still kind of want it. At the absolute least, we should define "mayonnaise seasoning" and make it a product that can be purchased.
