The chief of the DOJ is denying the bribery charge.
Arnolfo Teves Jr.'s lawyer has accused the DOJ of offering a large sum of money to Marvin Miranda, one of the suspects in the killing of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo.
However, Topacio did not clarify what the money was going to be used for, only that it came from a "reliable source." The Inquirer attempted but was unable to obtain comment from Miranda's lawyer, Reynante Orceo.
Except for Miranda, all of the suspects in the Degamo homicide had recanted their testimonies confessing their involvement in the crime, claiming police torture. Remulla, on the other hand, said that Orceo, a former DOJ undersecretary, gave the suspects P8 million apiece to recant their admissions, which Orceo disputed. When confronted about Topacio's charges, Remulla answered angrily, "Baloney! Garbage.”
Teves has been charged with the murder of Degamo, but has refused to come home. He has posted videos of himself challenging Remulla to resign, dancing in boxer shorts, and a photo of a man wearing Middle Eastern clothes.
“They’re trifling with the judicial process; they should respect the law. This is not a story for social media; these are the stories of the people they killed! The [closed circuit television] footage showed this,” Remulla said.
After the preliminary investigation, it could take less than a month to file charges in court which would issue an arrest warrant against the congressman should he still refuse to come home, he added.
