Bill Seeks Free Vaccines for All Senior Citizens

I know how important Senior Citizens are, and we also know that they easily get sick, so this new bill is what they need.

In a move that could significantly impact the health of millions of Filipinos, a new bill has been proposed to provide free vaccines to all senior citizens in the country.

Agri Party-list Rep. Wilbert Lee has filed House Bill 11055, also known as the Safeguarding Seniors: Free Immunization Act. This measure seeks to amend the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010, which currently limits free vaccinations to indigent seniors.

In addition to influenza and pneumococcal disease, Lee's proposal would provide free vaccinations for older adults against pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, diphtheria, and other illnesses as determined by the Department of Health (DOH).

"We Filipinos greatly value our grandparents and parents who cared for and raised us. In their old age, we wish to care for them and given them appropriate attention," Lee said.

According to Lee, elderly people's immune systems are compromised, making them particularly susceptible to infectious infections.

"Many diseases can have severe or even fatal effects for older adults, whose immune systems often become weaker as they age. Vaccines are crucial for preventing diseases, especially if they are made free and more accessible to all senior citizens," he said.

According to Lee, a lot of elderly people are afraid of getting sick because they can't afford medical care or hospital stays.

According to him, the Universal Health Care Act, also known as Republic Act 11223, which advocates for free medical care and medication for all Filipinos, is in keeping with the goals of the proposed free immunization program for all older persons.

"The bill aligns with the government's broader commitment to protecting the health and well-being of the elderly, promoting their right to healthcare, and ensuring that they live healthier, longer lives," Lee said.

With this proposed legislation, the Philippines takes a significant step toward prioritizing the health and well-being of its senior citizens. By providing free vaccinations to all older adults, the government can help reduce the burden of infectious diseases, improve quality of life, and ensure a healthier future for generations to come.
