DENR Calls for Public Support to Raise ₱100M for Endangered Species Conservation

The DENR is calling on the public to help save our endangered wildlife. By donating to their conservation efforts, you can help protect the Philippine eagle, tamaraw, dugong, Philippine cockatoo, marine turtles, and Palawan pangolin.

“Not only are they important on their own, but they are also important for the survival of other species in the ecosystem,” she said as the agency introduced its Save from Extinction program on Thursday.

The DENR has partnered with SM Supermalls and BDO to streamline donations for wildlife conservation.

Donating to protect our wildlife has never been easier. Simply visit a BDO ATM or branch, or purchase Kultura merchandise at SM.

“Without action, we risk losing not just [these] species, but the essential services they provide—services that are vital for our own survival and to the web of life,” Yulo-Loyzaga said.

The Philippines is facing a critical moment for its biodiversity. Six iconic species – the Philippine eagle, tamaraw, dugong, Philippine cockatoo, marine turtles, and Palawan pangolin – are teetering on the edge of extinction.

A Plight of Neglect

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has sounded the alarm, highlighting the alarming decline in populations due to habitat loss, poaching, and climate change. The Philippine eagle, for instance, now numbers less than 400 pairs, while the tamaraw population has plummeted to a mere 574-610 individuals.

A Call for Action

To address this urgent issue, the DENR is seeking a substantial increase in its budget, aiming to raise an additional P100 million. This critical funding will be used to bolster conservation efforts, including habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, and community engagement programs.

Partnering with organizations like the Philippine Eagle Foundation, WWF-Philippines, Zoological Society of London, d’Aboville Foundation, Katala Foundation, and local communities, the DENR is working tirelessly to safeguard these precious species.
