A mathematician claims that data cannot detect cheating; only the PCSO lottery audit can.
By just matching six numbers, PCSO Lotto offers us the chance to win millions of dollars one day. However, there is speculation that PCSO is only playing games with us, trying to get us to buy more tickets but they are the one who is winning.
The likelihood of winning consecutive lottery drawings, according to mathematician Guido David, is a "rare occurrence," but an audit will identify any "anomalies."
The PCSO lotto debate was discussed on Friday, January 26, by Guido David, who gained notoriety in the Philippines for his work with OCTA Research during the pandemic.
A professor at the UP Institute of Mathematics named David told DWPM Radyo 630 that the odds of winning in the 6/42 are one in five million; in the 6/49, one in fourteen million; and in the 6/55, one in twenty-nine million.
David was asked what the likelihood was that consecutive lotto games will be won in less than a month, similar to what occurred in PCSO's "Handog Pakabog" marketing draws.
“Nagbigay ako ng scenario na a few hundred thousand ang pumupusta kada bola. So, every bola, ang probability na may tatama is nasa 2% or less than 2%. Pero pag sunod-sunod yan, kunyari, dalawang bola, it’s 2% x 2% so 0.04%, so, paliit ng paliit. Kunyari, sampung sunod-sunod, napakaliiit ng probability nun. Hindi imposible, napakaliit. It’s a rare occurence pero maliit yung probability.”
Because of the recent promotions, which showed a larger probability of winning if 5 million people bet than if only a handful bet, the Philippine Lotto System (PCSO) has been accused of having a "anomaly". Because of how unusual the issue is, there are suspicions, but statistics can never show cheating.
Professor David of UP Diliman concurs with PCSO General Manager Mel Robles that the lottery is a "game of chance." The PCSO controversy will be looked into by the Department of Information and Communications Technology's Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (DICT-CICC).
As part of its Christmas and New Year draws, the PCSO increased the minimum guaranteed jackpot for the Grand Lotto 6/55, Ultra Lotto 6/58, Super Lotto 6/49, Lotto 6/42, and MegaLotto 6/45. The DICT-CICC will review the PCSO's system, ISO papers, and gaming regulations in Nevada, USA. The current draw series, according to Senator Koko Pimentel, is a "anomaly," as all games with large prizes had victors in less than a month. Mel Robles, General Manager of PCSO, reassured the committee that there was no cheating going on.
