Paperwork problems cause further delay in the issuance of plastic driver's licenses — LTO

Chief attorney for the Land Transportation Office (LTO) stated that the anticipated plastic driver's license cards are running behind schedule because they still need to clear technological obstacles. stated on Monday, Vigor Mendoza II.

Prior to the planned delivery of licenses this month, the LTO announced that the Philippine Society of Medicine for Drivers had contributed four million plastic cards.

However, Mendoza clarified in a radio appearance that the donated cards would still need to go through multiple government agency verification processes, which might take two to three weeks.

The Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), the House Committee on Transportation, and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) must examine the donated cards, according to the LTO Chief.

“As of now, we still don’t have the cards because…we are still waiting for the OSG’s opinion so that everything would be smoothed out…so we won’t have problems. We are just waiting for that so we can be given the green light as far as the four million [card] donations are concerned,” Mendoza said in a mix of Filipino and English over at Radyo630.

The Department of Transportation (DOST) will examine the four million donated driver's license cards before approving them, according to a statement made by the LTO Chief. The LTO Chief stressed that in order to expedite the procedure, certain requirements are required. But he cautioned that by 2024, the LTO will still need 10 to 12 million plastic cards. The LTO Chief reassured that, in spite of this, Filipinos whose licenses have expired may continue to use them until April 2024.
