The PNP head desires stricter laws governing online selling.

Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., the head of the Philippine National Police, has made a plea to Congress to consider the potential of drafting legislation to address the issue of people utilizing these platforms to convey illegal goods.

After witnessing the widespread sale of outlawed firecrackers during the holiday season via online marketplaces and courier services, the Philippine National Police is advocating for more stringent laws governing the use of social media and delivery services for product sales.

Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., the head of the PNP, has made a plea to Congress to consider the potential of passing legislation to address the issue of people using these platforms to carry illegal goods.

“Maybe we can study further or maybe through coordination with the legislation how to regulate transactions with courier services and online sellers and what can be banned,” Acorda said over Radyo Pilipinas.

Acorda has documented a rise in injuries as a result of illicit fireworks sales, which may be connected to internet marketplaces and courier services. Because it's against the law, the Anti-Cybercrime Group has detained people for selling firecrackers on Facebook. Acorda also reported that drug traffickers were employing courier services to carry illegal drugs.
