SMC Drops Pasig River Expressway (Parex) Project Amidst Environmental Opposition

According to SMC CEO Ramon Ang, San Miguel Corp. has abandoned its plans to construct the Pasig River Expressway because of environmental concerns.

“We are very sensitive [to] the opinion of the public. If the public think that it is not good [for] the public welfare, we will not do it anymore,” he said.

Six lanes of the 19.37-kilometer PAREx project are elevated toll roads that cross the Pasig River between Manila's Radial Road 10 and the projected South East Metro Manila Expressway at Circumferential Road 6.

Advocates of Science and Technology for the People and the #NoToParex campaign are among the organizations that are opposed to the proposed elevated expressway in the Philippines that would connect drivers to the Pasig River. I

t is anticipated that the project, which is a component of the Greater Capital Region Integrated Expressways Network, may harm the Pasig River and have an impact on the remaining food chain. A thorough engineering design is being prepared for by the Toll Regulatory Board.
