#ResistTogether: Metro Manila Pride 2019 triples in support and allies
Despite the pouring the rain, 70,000 members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community resisted together to celebrate the annual Metro Manila Pride March hosted by the Municipality of Marikina last June 29.
Last year, about 25,000 marched for the cause of Pride March: empower communities to push for pro-LGBTQ+ policies and social justice for everybody. Thus, Pride March 2018 was recorded as the oldest and biggest Pride protest in Southeast Asia. Pride March 2019 was almost thrice the number of attendees in 2018.
This year’s celebration of Pride went by the theme #ResistTogether which aims to highlight that the history of Pride is not just to celebrate but also to protest. This was in reference to the Stonewall riots of 1969. Those riots were sparked by the repeated police raids on Stonewall Inn—an infamous gay bar in New York’s Greenwich Village, 50 years ago.
In addition, the Pride march is still seeking for social equality and justice. It also emphasized the struggle against oppression faced not only by the LGBTQ+ community, but also other marginalized sectors at large.
Since 1994, Pride March has been an influential platform for the LGBTQ+ community to express their identities and stand on different societal issues in the country.
