Public is urged by the Department of Agriculture to consume more eggs.

Since eggs are now the least expensive form of protein, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is working with other government organizations to encourage Filipinos to include eggs in their diets.

“That is why we want to promote it so more people will eat eggs,” he said in a television interview with PTV on Monday.

The United Broiler Raisers’ Association (UBRA) last week attributed merchants' losses to poor demand, which resulted in a low retail price for eggs.

A medium-sized egg can cost anywhere from P6.80 to P8.50 per piece, according to the DA's most recent pricing monitoring of Metro Manila markets.

This was less than the P7.33 farm gate price of eggs in October of previous year, when typhoons Egay (international name: Doksuri) and Goring (international name: Saola) decreased egg output, according to UBRA's pricing monitoring.

According to De Mesa, the current cold snap has enhanced egg output.

“For now, we have good production from our layer [chicken] industry because of the cold [weather]. This is more conducive for our layers,”  DA spokesperson Arnel V. De Mesa said.
