Diokno was announced to take post of deceased Nestor Espenilla Jr, who passed away last February 23 after battling tongue cancer for more than one year. He was appointed as the 5th head of the central bank last March 4.
According to a Philstar article, BSP Chief Diokno said in his first media briefing that the slowing inflation in the Philippines would give the central bank the opportunity to ease monetary policy.
The new Chief also hinted that the central bank may cut the reserve requirement ratio by one percentage point over the next four quarters amid the steady downtrend inflation. The BSP also decided to keep interest rates steady due to the slowing down in inflation which is now expected to ease back to BSP’s 2-4% target for 2019 and 2020.
Diokno expressed his intent to continue reforms initiated by his predecessors. He said the central bank would put more emphasis on fighting cyber threats and attacks
