After China launched a new water cannon attack, the Philippines received support from its allies.
Allies, including the United States and the European Union, have backed the Philippines against China's sea intimidation, including the Chinese Coast Guard's attempt to topple a resupply mission in Ayungin Shoal, characterizing the Chinese Coast Guard's conduct as violating international law.
“We stand with our Philippine ally,” Miller said in a statement yesterday. “The United States stands shoulder-to-shoulder with our Philippine ally in the face of the People’s Republic of China’s repeated harassment in the South China Sea,” he stressed.
The United States has acknowledged an international tribunal's decision in 2016 that invalidated China's claims in the South China Sea, including Ayungin Shoal. The US encouraged China to respect high seas navigation freedoms and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
The United States also restated its commitment to assisting the Philippines in the event of armed strikes in the South China Sea. The European Union and German embassies also reaffirmed their support for the Philippines' efforts to promote international law in the South China Sea. New Zealand has urged for the peaceful resolution of conflicts in conformity with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
