ChatGPT uses "memory" to retrieve your preferences and identity.
As part of an update that could make future talks "more helpful," ChatGPT will get a memory and the capacity to recall topics and facts that users have previously talked with it.
In order to "learn how useful it is," OpenAI announced that it was testing memory with a "small portion" of its user base. It also promised to "share plans for a broader rollout" in the future.
According to the AI company, users will have complete control over ChatGPT's memory feature. They will be able to ask the chatbot what it remembers, expressly instruct it to remember something, or instruct it to forget anything by changing the app's settings.
Users can completely disable the memory tool for AI chatbots that OpenAI has announced. The technology can be used to improve AI models by using user-provided content, but privacy and security regulations are changing.
“Memory brings additional privacy and safety considerations, such as what type of information should be remembered and how it’s used,” the company added.
“We’re taking steps to assess and mitigate biases, and steer ChatGPT away from proactively remembering sensitive information, like your health details – unless you explicitly ask it to.”
It also mentioned that users might communicate with ChatGPT without memory by using its ephemeral chat capability.
